About the Role

The opportunity

Downer’s Utilities business is seeking an experienced Senior Project Accountant to provide financial leadership and commercial insight across a portfolio of major infrastructure projects and programs.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will partner closely with operational leaders, Project Managers, Commercial teams, and Finance stakeholders to ensure accurate financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, revenue recognition, and project performance analysis. This role is critical in providing transparency around project performance, enabling informed decision-making, and ensuring strong governance and compliance across the business.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially minded accounting professional who enjoys working closely with the business, influencing outcomes, and helping drive sustainable financial performance across complex projects.

What you'll do

  • Partner with operational teams to deliver accurate budgeting, forecasting, and project financial reporting.
  • Monitor project profitability, revenue recognition, cost performance, and margin outcomes.
  • Provide insightful analysis on project and program performance, including risks, opportunities, and cash flow management.
  • Support billing processes, WIP and accounts receivable management, and working capital performance.
  • Drive compliance with Downer financial controls, reporting frameworks, and accounting standards.

What we offer

  • Competitive remuneration package with opportunity for career progression.
  • Exposure to high-profile infrastructure projects across a diverse Utilities portfolio.
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced operational, commercial, and finance leaders.
  • Access to Perks@Downer, providing financial, retail, travel, and wellbeing discounts.
  • Learning and development opportunities through programs such as THRIVE and EmpowHER.
  • A dedicated internal mobility team focused on career growth, succession planning, and redeployment opportunities.
  • The security and opportunities of a Tier 1 ASX-listed organisation with extensive national operations and in-house expertise.

What we're looking for

  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting, or Commerce, with CA or CPA membership (or working towards) highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in project accounting, financial analysis, or commercial finance within a large and complex project-based environment.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, revenue recognition, project costing, and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience using ERP systems such as JD Edwards (JDE) or similar platforms.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, and analytical skills, with a proactive and commercially focused mindset.
