The STEM Research Center enables students to build skills and a community through our research program, workshops and STEM events. Each year BCC students have overwhelming success in our STEM Student Scholars (3SP) Research Program, utilizing the STEM Research Center to conduct faculty mentored research projects which benefit our society. About the Role

POSITION SUMMARY

Bergen Community College is looking for Custodians to work during the third shift for the college. The Custodians will be responsible for all phases of cleaning and maintenance within the buildings including office areas, corridors, stairwells, elevators, restrooms, showers, classrooms, conference rooms, exterior walks, patios, walls and windows. Typical tasks will include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing stripping and refinishing of floors, dusting, cleaning restrooms, replenishing bathroom supplies, trash removal, vacuuming carpets, changing light bulbs, setting up and cleaning up for a wide variety of events and executing office moves.

Responsibilities included but are not limited to: 

  • Use approved methods and materials in cleaning and maintenance within the buildings including office areas, corridors, stairwells, elevators, restrooms, showers, classrooms, conference rooms and restocking of supplies as needed. 
  • Cleaning glass, light fixtures, changing light bulbs and polishing metal fixtures and trimmings. 
  • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing of floors. 
  • Cleaning and vacuuming carpets. 
  • Empty trash receptacles in offices, corridors, and exterior campus areas. 
  • Washing walls and cleaning interior and exterior windows. 
  • Maintaining exterior walks, patios and roads including cleaning, sweeping, shoveling snow, removing ice, and applying salt. 
  • Setting up and cleaning up for a wide variety of events including moving tables, chairs, furniture, and decorative items based on logistics for events provided. 
  • Executing office moves including manually transporting furniture and equipment. 
  • Performing any other duties or tasks as may be assigned. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labor including ability to perform frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders; must be able to stand for a prolonged period of time. 
  • Must be able to perform certain tasks on a repetitive basis, including but not limited to, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, and squatting; must be able to withstand exposure to noise from equipment, machines, and vehicles.
  • Must be able to work in unconditioned confined spaces in hot or cold climates and must have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms heat, cold, and any other weather indigenous to the area; must be able to see small objects. 


SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Knowledge of custodial procedures. 
  • Able and willing to work independently as well as in a team setting. 
  • Requires the ability to read and follow label instructions on cleaning supplies, as well as follow basic verbal & written instructions. 
  • Must be able to use hand tools and operate manual and power janitorial equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, stripping machines, vacuums; must be able to shovel snow and remove ice. 
  • Must be able to work with diverse and multicultural students staff faculty and visitors with sensitivity and diplomacy.

Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred. 

Experience: Must have a minimum of six months related experience. 

Other: According to the New Jersey First Act law, applicants must be residents of the state of NJ to hold public employment. Valid driver's license and the ability to drive in the state of New Jersey preferred.

Selected individuals will be subject to pass a Criminal Background Check. 


SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Annual Salary is $43,750
  • NJ Educator's Health Plan with free dental and vision. NJ State pension plan
  • 13 vacation days, 15 sick days, 4 personal days, 2 floating holidays, 3 partial sick days. All designated holidays and 5 non-designated holidays a year.
