JOB SUMMARY (overview of job): The Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) provides 24/7, community-based, in-person behavioral health crisis response throughout Lewis and Clark County, Jefferson County, and Broadwater County responding to mental health, substance use, and co-occurring crises across homes, public spaces, schools, shelters, healthcare settings, and other community locations.

MCRT operates as an interdisciplinary team, typically pairing a licensed clinician with an allied responder (peer support, community health worker, EMT, master’s-level trainee, etc.). Together, team members assess safety and needs, de-escalate crises using trauma-informed approaches, stabilize individuals in the least restrictive setting possible, and connect individuals to appropriate ongoing supports.

All MCRT staff function within a shared crisis response framework that respects role boundaries while leveraging complementary expertise. Clinical decision-making authority rests with licensed clinicians; allied responders provide engagement, support, advocacy, and system navigation.
The Mobile Crisis Response Therapist I is a licensure candidate mental health clinician who serves as a core member of the interdisciplinary Mobile Crisis Response Team. This role provides in‑person crisis assessment, intervention, stabilization, and care coordination under clinical supervision from a licensed mental health clinician.

The Mobile Crisis Response Therapist Level 1 or 2, is a Licensure Candidate, that serves on the Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT).

Essential Position Functions:
•    Immediately reports to scene where dispatched by hospital-provided vehicle
•    Assess mental status, risk, and clinical needs of persons in crisis
•    Assess risk of harm to self or others utilizing standardized tools
•    Provide crisis intervention, de‑escalation, and brief therapeutic support Collaborate with allied responders to engage individuals and families
•    Determine appropriate disposition and level of care
•    Develop and document individualized safety plans
•    Coordinate transportation when needed, prioritizing non‑law‑enforcement options when clinically appropriate
•    Evaluate clinical need for hospitalization or involuntary treatment according to legal criteria
•    Provides coordination of care and linking to appropriate treatment services to meet the needs of the individual. Collaborate with legal officials regarding the civil commitment process as needed.
•    Provide consultation to families, friends and other providers of care to persons in acute distress
•    Complete clinical records and reports according to established policy and procedure
•    Communicate effectively and professionally with members of community including but not limited to law enforcement and first responders
•    Cooperate with law enforcement members in a professional and courteous manner
•    Provide follow up services for clients after a crisis within 2 business days and for up to 14 days following a crisis to check on referrals and identify further needs.
•    Maintains a valid Montana driver’s license with clear driving record
•    Crisis response therapist I will work under the supervision of a LCPC or LCSW until Master’s Degree, LCPC or LCSW license is obtained.
•    Participates in clinical, administrative, and supervisory meetings.
•    Complete trainings as assigned.
•    Maintain collaborative relationships with community referral resources, hospitals and community stakeholders.
•    Conduct proactive outreach and rounding in identified community hotspots during periods of low call volume, in coordination with dispatch and community partners, to support early intervention, relationship-building, and crisis prevention
•    Provide, document, and complete required billing workflows for crisis response services in accordance with Montana Medicaid and state regulatory requirements, including services eligible for reimbursement under applicable crisis response billing rules
 

Level 1 Requirements: 

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years related clinical experience required. Experience in a crisis setting preferred.

EDUCATION: Master’s degree in social work or counseling required, additional crisis training preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: Must maintain active Montana license as SWLC or PCLC. Licensure candidates must complete licensure hours and sit for licensure exam within three years of hire. Current and active American Heart Association BLS required. Chemical Dependency Certification preferred; Valid Montana driver’s license required with clear driving record.

Level 2 Requirements: 

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years 3 years related clinical experience required

EDUCATION: Master’s degree in social work or counseling required, additional crisis training preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: LCSW or LCPC license (or other clinical mental health professional, listed under MCA 53-21-102 (11)(b)-(h), who is qualified to provide a biopsychosocial assessment within their authorized scope of practice.) BLS required, Master’s Degree required; Chemical Dependency Certification preferred; Valid Montana driver’s license required with clear driving record. Current Montana License as a Mental Health Professional Person Preferred.
