Position Overview

We are seeking a Bookkeeper to support daily accounting and financial operations within the insurance and accounting industry. This role will maintain accurate financial records, process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, complete account reconciliations, prepare bookkeeping reports, and assist with month-end and year-end close activities.

The ideal candidate has strong bookkeeping knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage confidential financial information. This position will work closely with accounting, finance, insurance, billing, claims, and operations teams to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and processed on time.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping and Transaction Processing
  • Record daily financial transactions in the general ledger and accounting systems.

  • Process accounts payable invoices, expense reports, payment requests, and vendor transactions.

  • Process accounts receivable invoices, customer payments, deposits, refunds, and account adjustments.

  • Prepare and post routine journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, reclassifications, and corrections.

  • Verify transaction coding, supporting documentation, approvals, and adherence to established accounting procedures.

  • Maintain organized records of invoices, receipts, payment confirmations, contracts, and other financial documentation.

  • Monitor outstanding receivables and payables and communicate overdue or unresolved items to the appropriate team members.

Insurance and Industry Accounting Support
  • Record and reconcile insurance-related transactions, including premiums, commissions, claims payments, recoveries, refunds, and policy-related receivables and payables.

  • Review billing, policy administration, claims, and payment information for completeness and accuracy.

  • Assist with the reconciliation of insurance billing records, customer accounts, carrier statements, and payment activity.

  • Investigate discrepancies involving premiums, commissions, claims, refunds, settlements, and other insurance transactions.

  • Coordinate with underwriting, claims, billing, finance, and operations teams to resolve accounting issues.

  • Maintain accurate records for policyholders, customers, vendors, carriers, and other business partners.

Reconciliations and Close Support
  • Complete bank, credit card, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger reconciliations.

  • Research reconciling items, identify errors or missing information, and document resolution activities.

  • Assist with month-end and year-end close procedures, including account reviews, cutoff activities, and supporting schedules.

  • Prepare account summaries, aging reports, transaction detail, and other routine financial reports.

  • Assist with the preparation of audit schedules and documentation for internal and external review.

  • Support financial record cleanup, duplicate transaction reviews, and the correction of incomplete or inaccurate entries.

Controls, Compliance, and Process Improvement
  • Follow accounting policies, internal controls, segregation of duties, and approval requirements.

  • Protect confidential financial, customer, policyholder, claims, and business information.

  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company procedures.

  • Assist with accounting system updates, data validation, reporting improvements, and process documentation.

  • Identify opportunities to improve transaction processing, reconciliations, documentation, and bookkeeping workflows.

  • Support audit requests, compliance reviews, and other finance-related projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 1+ year of experience in bookkeeping, accounting support, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or a related financial operations role.

  • Working knowledge of bookkeeping principles, double-entry accounting, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.

  • Basic understanding of insurance accounting transactions, including premiums, commissions, claims, refunds, and policy-related payments.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, sorting, filtering, and basic data analysis.

  • Experience using accounting software, enterprise resource planning systems, or financial management platforms.

  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy when processing financial information.

  • Ability to organize work, manage competing priorities, and meet recurring deadlines.

  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Preferred
  • Experience in the insurance, accounting, financial services, public accounting, or professional services industry.

  • Experience with QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar accounting systems.

  • Knowledge of insurance billing, claims payments, commissions, carrier statements, or policy-related accounting.

  • Familiarity with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), or insurance accounting practices.

  • Experience supporting month-end close, audits, internal controls, or financial reporting activities.

  • Progress toward a bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, or finance-related certification.
