About Derby Academy
Founded in 1784, Derby Academy is an independent school serving students from preschool through grade eight in Hingham, Massachusetts. Our After School Music Program provides students with the opportunity to develop their musical talents through individualized instruction in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Derby Academy is seeking enthusiastic and experienced Private Music Instructors to join our growing After School Music Program. We are currently looking for educators who specialize in woodwind instruments, brass instruments, or both to provide high-quality one-on-one instruction to students in grades Pre-K through 8. This is an excellent opportunity for professional musicians, music educators, graduate students, or retired teachers looking to share their passion for music in a supportive independent school environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide engaging, individualized private lessons for students of varying ages and experience levels.
- Develop lesson plans tailored to each student's goals and abilities.
- Foster a positive, encouraging learning environment that builds confidence and musical skills.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress.
- Coordinate scheduling with Derby Academy's Auxiliary Programs Office.
- Encourage students to participate in an end of year recital performance opportunity.
- Work with the Auxiliary Office to develop the end of year recital.
Schedule
- Part-time, 30 minute time slots
- Weekday afternoons M-Th between 3:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
- Flexible schedule based on instructor availability and student enrollment.
Compensation
$37.50 per 30 minute lesson

Requirements
Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency teaching woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon) and/or brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba).
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Performance, or a related field preferred (or equivalent professional experience).
- Previous experience teaching private lessons is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with school staff.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Successful completion of all required background checks prior to employment.
