National HSE Operations Manager

About the role

This role can be based in either North Sydney or Melbourne offices with a national remit and expectation to visit our project sites across the country.

Reporting to the General Manager Major Projects, this role will develop and drive the HSE strategic direction for the division and will lead & support a team of HSE professionals in delivering safe, environmentally and quality outcomes through partnering with the business.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership, direction, supervision and inspirational management to all team members (direct & indirect).

• Establish clear communication, solid lines of control and delegation to sub-ordinates and actively create and maintain a culture of openness, responsiveness, honest, ethics and responsibility across the team.

• Provide advice and coaching to Project Managers, Supervisors, Construction Managers and Protection Officers on project specific HSSE and rail safety reporting & Analysis for client and management needs.

• Experience in Quantitative and qualitative risk assessment and development and monitoring of risk controls and actions involved in delivery and implementation of projects.

• Knowledge of Rail Safety and HSE legislation and statutes and ability to interpret any applicable statutes or legislation relevant to Project.

• Monitor and interpret relevant HSSE legislation, policies and regulations in order to provide direction and advice to projects which meet statutory and corporate objectives and responsibilities

• Undertake any adhoc projects, initiatives, tasks as directed by the General Manager (Major Projects) or in consultation with the relevant HSSE Manager

• Prepare and review rail safety and project HSSE documentation to ensure a coordinated approach and legislative and procedural requirements are met.

• Liaise with customers, external regulatory bodies’ state organizations responsible for workplace safety and ensure compliance and compatibility with their systems and processes.

• Assist in managing the implementation of return to work programs and procedures to ensure that all injuries are managed according to Company and Legislative requirements.

• Design and deploy safety culture change initiatives aimed at increasing the focus and attention to safety and environment in the business.

• Provide safety statistics on a monthly basis for inclusion in monthly reports.

• Monitor and review the safety risk profile of contracts and projects to identify areas of improvement and strengthening.

   

About You

• Proven experience in a HSE leadership role and managing a high performing HSE team

• Tertiary Qualification (Diploma or greater) in a Workplace Safety and Health related discipline preferred

• Experience leading HSE on major inrastrucutre projects in Rail, Road, Tunnel projects

• Understanding of rail legislation as it relates to HSE

• Cert IV Training and Assessment

• Incident Investigation Trained (ICAM preferable)

• Strong communication skills including strong negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally.
