The Nursing Officer, NPL Mine Medical Centre (MMC) operates as part of the multidisciplinary OHS medical and health team along with Medical Officers, a Pharmacist, Radiographer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Industrial Hygienist, Emergency Response and Safety team members. As a Nurse, you work as part of a team to assist in providing primary and emergent medical care and or referral for workers presenting with illness or injuries. The medical and health service has a focus on supporting the ongoing health and wellbeing of the New Porgera workforce through health surveillance and health prevention initiative, and New Porgera Mine also assists community medical providers and local patients, as time and priorities allow.
The Nursing Officer – Medical & Health within the Mine Medical Centre (MMC)
In this role, you will:
Assist the nursing, medical and allied health team with the smooth running of the MMC
Provide effective triage, treatment and referral of patients within the MMC and assist with referral tracking and follow up of patients / reporting when referred to attend external specialist medical, hospital or dental services
Provide first response to primary care illness, injury and emergency incidents across site and assist with conducting coordinated road and aeromedical transfers, as required
Provide contemporary nursing, wound / trauma care and reporting for patients involved in work related illness or injuries, requiring ongoing injury management and or return to work plans
Assist the medical team to coordinate the ongoing care, reporting and follow up of inpatient and outpatient services and patients as required
Ensure medical and emergency response equipment, consumables and pharmacology are managed and reporting in accordance to MMC, NPL Health and Safety and PNG medical and pharmaceutical compliance and reporting standards
Oversee infection control management and cleaning in centre and across the MMC fleet of ambulances
Assist the medical and health service with occupation health surveillance and vaccination programs
Assist the Health Superintendent in developing and improving medical systems and operating standards to ensure required and appropriate medical and allied health coverage for the MMC’s operating requirements.
Participate and provide clinical input into incident, case debrief or peer review and feedback meetings with the focus on continuous improvement. Ensuring all incidents and cases are reported and investigated according to Company policy and statutory requirements and all recommended corrective actions are completed.
Ensure maintenance of own clinical practice knowledge, skills and capability across primary and emergency care, and participate in continuing professional development and CME activities across the annual CPD/CME program.
Develop, implement, monitor and maintain safe work practices, procedures, and promote health and safety awareness initiatives. Promote and comply with the NPL Occupational Health & Safety and Site Policy.
Contribute to the NPL occupational health and safety department program and initiatives, including the attendance at meetings or in response to email communication, as required.
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:
Nursing degree or diploma qualifications with greater than 5 years’ experience in PNG
Maintain current PNG Nursing registration (ATR) and authority to practice
Demonstrated currency in maintenance of Nursing related knowledge and skills, through active participation in CPD
Ability to prioritise workload, demonstrate professional and clinical judgement and be confident in working autonomously and remotely
Hold experience in emergency response, emergency department and or intensive care nursing with ambulance road transfer and aeromedical experience an advantage
Have Experience in assisting the occupation health surveillance or workers and in conducting medical and health assessments
Have Computer skills and experience using an electronic medical record system
Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Hold a current PNG driving licenses (mandatory requirement)
High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the health and safety of persons in the mining industry in PNG
Mobilisation Requirement
This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off, working day and night shifts. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months).
