About the Role

Outpatient Nurse Coordinator - Infectious Diseases (UPMC Presbyterian)

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a dedicated and experienced nursing professional to join our Infectious Diseases Team as an Outpatient Nurse Coordinator.

About the Position: The Outpatient Nurse Coordinator is a member of the Infectious Diseases (ID) care delivery team responsible for the care of the ID patient in a global view, accountable for multiple aspects of the patient care package even when patient contact is minimized. The Outpatient Nurse Coordinator uses independent judgment and continued communication with the patient, family, physician and community resources to assist the patient in attaining a measure of outpatient health. The position is primarily office based with phone and computer contact with patients and care providers.

 

Please consider this unique and rewarding opportunity to work in the Center for Care of Infectious Diseases (CCID) ambulatory care clinic. You will work among a dedicated and highly engaged team of doctors caring for patients in a variety of ID services including, but not limited to general infectious diseases, outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT), travel related infections and prevention, transplant infections, endovascular infections, etc.

 

Schedule: The position works only Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm – off weekends and holidays. Ability to work in a hybrid setting (work from home) some days and work among veteran nurse co-workers with strong teamwork relationships.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage in ongoing professional development and participate in shared governance and quality initiatives.
  • Provide leadership within the practice, supporting nursing and support staff and maintaining a safe, effective care environment.
  • Deliver holistic, patient‑centered care, including triage, care coordination, education, and follow‑up.
  • Serve as primary nursing resource and liaison for patient caseload, coordinating with physicians and external services.
  • Build positive, collaborative relationships with patients, families, and all care team members.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Support department operations, safety, regulatory preparation, and practice improvements.
  • Educate patients, families, students, and new staff; may precept and assist with staff development.
  • Promote a compassionate, patient‑focused experience and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.


  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience. BSN preferred.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. 
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 30 days of hire
  • Preference for ACLS, required within 30 days
  • Registered Nurse (RN)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
