Senior Engineer

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, you'll design, build and operate the engineering capabilities that enable teams across Westpac to deliver secure, reliable and high-quality software. Working across cloud, Kubernetes, developer platforms, CI/CD, identity, observability and automation, you'll turn complex requirements into practical platform solutions that teams can adopt with confidence. This is a deeply hands-on engineering role. You'll work across design, code and operations, independently own complex platform capabilities, contribute to technical decisions and help teams apply strong engineering practices. You'll balance immediate delivery needs with reliability, security, scalability, cost and long-term maintainability.
You'll help evolve the SDLC into an AI-powered, agentic engineering ecosystem, building the platforms, workflows and guardrails that help teams design, build, test, deploy and operate software more effectively. As a Senior Engineer, your impact will be measured by the quality and reliability of the capabilities you own and by how effectively other engineers can use them. You'll turn recurring needs into reusable solutions, reduce delivery friction and contribute practical improvements to the broader engineering practice. Key responsibilities include:
Build Platform Capabilities
- Design and build reusable platform services, APIs, tooling and automation.
- Develop and operate internal developer platforms and self-service capabilities.
- Create tested infrastructure, deployment and operational patterns that teams can reuse.
Deliver Technical Solutions
- Build capabilities that support an agentic-first, modern engineering SDLC.
- Apply modern engineering standards and contribute improvements based on delivery experience.
- Balance reliability, security, scalability, cost and developer experience.
Drive Operational Excellence
- Build secure, resilient and observable platforms.
- Implement SLOs, operational practices and recovery capabilities.
- Diagnose incidents and performance issues and drive continuous improvement.
- Embed security and compliance into delivery pipelines and platform services.
Contribute to Engineering Impact
- Partner with product, engineering and security teams.
- Identify recurring team needs and convert them into reusable platform capabilities.
- Influence technical outcomes across your team and adjacent engineering teams.
- Public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP)
- Kubernetes. Docker and cloud-native technologies
- Linux and networking
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/OpenTofu/Ansible)
- GitOps (Argo CD, Flux)
- CI/CD platforms, GitHub Enterprise and Harness
- Observability platforms (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry or similar)
- API-first and distributed systems design
- Security engineering and software supply chain controls
- Software engineering capability, ideally with Go, Rust or TypeScript.
- Experience building platform software, automation, CLIs or developer tooling.
- Strong debugging, reliability and systems-thinking skills.
- Ability to work from technical design and implementation through to production support.
- Understanding of AI-native engineering practices, agentic systems and platform capabilities that enable an AI-powered SDLC.
