About the Role

Company Description

At McLaren Racing, software is a critical part of how we innovate, make decisions, and ultimately improve performance on and off the track. We are looking for experienced Senior Specialist Software Engineers to join our Software & Data Science team and help deliver high-quality software solutions that support our Formula 1 operation.

Job Description

Permanent & Fixed Term Contract Opportunities

We are recruiting for both permanent and fixed-term opportunities across a variety of projects. These range from long-term performance-focused software platforms through to business transformation initiatives aimed at improving engineering and operational workflows across McLaren Racing.

The Role

The purpose of this role is to analyse, design, and engineer innovative software solutions aligned to the needs of McLaren Racing. As a senior member of the development team, you will provide technical leadership across multiple projects, contribute to wider engineering initiatives, and support the development of less experienced engineers.

The Software & Data Science department is responsible for designing and delivering bespoke software platforms and tools that support every stage of the Formula 1 lifecycle, from aerodynamic development and simulation through to trackside decision-making and race strategy. We bring together software engineering, data science, machine learning, and DevOps expertise to deliver performance-focused solutions.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll play a key role in the design and delivery of software solutions, working closely with stakeholders across the business while providing technical guidance and support to colleagues where needed.

The role is primarily based at the McLaren Technology Centre, with a blend of onsite and remote working. Due to the nature of Formula 1 operations, occasional out-of-hours and weekend support may be required.

What You'll Do:

  • Contribute to the team's technical roadmap and support long-term planning while remaining adaptable to changing business priorities.
  • Lead the full software development lifecycle, including analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support.
  • Take ownership of technical projects, delivering high-quality solutions on time and to budget.
  • Capture and understand business requirements and translate them into robust, scalable software architectures.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, product stakeholders, and business users across McLaren Racing.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to other engineers.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks while driving continuous improvement.
  • Produce reliable effort estimates and communicate progress clearly to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, standards, and development methodologies.
  • Keep pace with emerging technologies and share knowledge across the wider team.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

  • Strong commercial experience in full stack software development using C#/.NET, with working knowledge of Python and TypeScript.
  • Experience delivering software solutions using agile methodologies and software engineering best practices.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles, including SOLID principles, with the ability to develop maintainable and scalable solutions.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex technical problems, identify practical solutions, and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Comfortable working autonomously, taking ownership of workstreams and driving delivery with minimal supervision.
  • Strong understanding of Git-based development workflows, Azure DevOps (or similar), and SQL or document databases.
  • Knowledge of modern software architecture and engineering practices. Experience with cloud platforms, microservices, Kubernetes, Kafka, stream processing or React would be advantageous.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and informal mentoring to other engineers.
  • For the fixed-term opportunity, experience joining complex environments quickly and contributing to project or transformation-focused delivery teams would be beneficial.

Personal Attributes

  • Self-motivated and proactive, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Comfortable operating independently while knowing when to collaborate and seek input from others.
  • Collaborative problem solver who values simple, effective solutions and continuous improvement.
  • Adaptable and resilient, able to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Committed to continuous learning and sharing knowledge with others.
  • Approachable and professional, with the ability to build strong working relationships across a range of stakeholders.
