Summary:
The National Account Director, Lead is the day-to-day leader of the National Account Director (NAD) team and is accountable for translating U.S. Market Access strategy into disciplined payer account execution. The role leads and develops NADs, directs strategic account coverage and planning, advances payer policy and access objectives, and personally manages selected high-priority accounts. The Lead will initially focus the team on the Company’s market and pipeline products while building the capabilities and operating model required to adapt successfully to future launches and portfolio expansion across relevant U.S. payer channels.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the day-to-day performance and development of the NAD team through coaching, field observation, feedback, skill development, succession planning and clear standards for strategic account execution.
- Translate U.S. Market Access objectives into an actionable national payer strategy and continuously optimize account segmentation, prioritization, assignment, resource deployment and coverage across Commercial, Medicaid, Self-Funded Employers, and other relevant payer channels, including nationally influential, affiliated and federated payer organizations.
- Establish and enforce a disciplined strategic account planning process with clear objectives, stakeholder maps, policy/access goals, tactics, milestones, risks and next actions; personally manage selected high-priority accounts and serve as an escalation and relationship resource for the NAD team.
- Develop NAD capability to independently lead consultative payer engagements using approved value proposition and payer materials to uncover decision criteria, policy and coverage considerations, evidence needs, operational barriers and actionable customer insights.
- Lead payer access and policy shaping strategies across medical- and pharmacy-benefit products, including medical policy, prior authorization, utilization management, formulary positioning, patient cost-sharing and other coverage requirements; coordinate compliant escalation of barriers that may restrict appropriate patient access.
- Prepare and adapt the NAD organization for portfolio evolution and new launches, including payer landscape assessment, account prioritization, pre-approval engagement planning where appropriate, value-message readiness, policy tracking, field training, account transition and early-launch execution.
- Capture and translate payer evidence needs and customer insights into actionable recommendations for HEOR/RWE, value messaging, market research, analytics, evidence generation and access strategy; represent the NAD perspective in relevant cross-functional planning.
- Establish meaningful NAD KPIs and leading indicators for in-market and launch products; use performance data, account-plan progress, policy/access outcomes and insight quality to coach the team, redirect resources and communicate execution status to leadership.
- Partner with Medical, Patient Services, Marketing, HEOR, Analytics, Trade/Distribution, Legal/Compliance, sales/Key Account Management, Finance and other functions to resolve access barriers, develop approved payer tools and resources, and protect continuity of patient access.
- Manage relevant account management agencies, vendors, external partners and payer-conference investments to strengthen payer intelligence, customer access, strategic relationships and execution support.
- Maintain operational continuity and a high accountability, collaborative team culture through disciplined documentation of account strategies, relationships, workstreams, decisions, risks and next actions, enabling efficient knowledge transfer during personnel or portfolio changes.
Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge of the U.S. coverage and reimbursement landscape across Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer channels.
- Proven success leading and coaching payer account teams in consultative customer engagement and strategic account execution.
- Rare disease experience and expertise with medical benefit, infused/injectables required; cell and/or gene therapy products strongly preferred.
- Experience developing national payer strategies, account coverage models, segmentation, prioritization, and resource allocation across complex payer organizations required
- Demonstrated payer launch readiness experience, including transitioning teams from market products to successful new product launches.
- Strong understanding of medical policy, prior authorization, utilization management, formulary/access dynamics, payer evidence requirements, and access related cross functional strategies.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, communication, presentation, and leadership skills, with the ability to thrive in a cross-functional, evolving environment.
- Field-based leadership role requiring travel for office visits, customer engagements, field coaching, company meetings, conferences, and industry events.
Education & Experience:
- 3-5 years of demonstrated experience leading national payer strategy for medical benefit therapies is required, and account execution through at least one product launch or major access transition is strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree in business or related area preferred.
- 15 + years of experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, including 10+ years in brand/market access marketing and market access account management and leadership.
- Knowledge of payer contracting strategies is preferred

The annualized target salary range for this role is $215,000 to $250,000; actual salaries will vary and may be above or below this range depending on several factors, including experience, education, training, location, and merit.
