The Role



As a Senior Substation Engineer, you'll play a key role in designing and delivering high-voltage substation projects that help keep power flowing to communities across the region. Working alongside a team of experienced engineers and designers, you'll lead the development of physical and electrical designs, solve complex technical challenges, and support projects from concept through construction.


This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys both hands-on design work and mentoring others. You'll have the opportunity to influence project outcomes, collaborate with utility clients, and help develop the next generation of engineers while contributing to meaningful infrastructure projects. The role will also support design reviews and quality initiatives to ensure project deliverables meet client expectations and industry standards



What Your Day Will Look Like

  • Lead the design of new and upgraded high-voltage substations ranging from 32.4kV to 500kV.
  • Develop physical and electrical engineering deliverables, including one-line diagrams, yard layouts, conduit and cable plans, relay panel arrangements, and bills of material.
  • Prepare engineering and construction documents for substation expansion, replacement, modernization, and protection projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations including voltage drop, CT burden and saturation, lighting, and short circuit calculations.
  • Develop and modify technical specifications for major substation equipment such as transformers, breakers, and control houses.
  • Collaborate with project managers, designers, clients, and field personnel to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Support engineering activities during construction, testing, and commissioning.
  • Participate in design reviews and quality checks to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Travel up to 20% as needed to support projects and client needs.

Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Familia


Essentials to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Experience supporting the design of utility substation projects.
  • Working knowledge of substation physical and/or electrical design principles.
  • Ability to develop and review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Understanding of applicable industry codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, project managers, clients, and field personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% as needed to support projects and client needs

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical leadership.
  • Familiarity with utility clients and industry standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
