About the Role

POSITION SUMMARY

The Production Manager runs daily shop operations, directing supervisors, leads, and production personnel to meet schedule, quality, safety, and cost objectives. The position keeps steel sheets, trim, components, and other materials moving efficiently through the shop and works with Production Control, Detailing, Purchasing, Quality, Safety, and Maintenance to align resources, clear constraints, and deliver customer orders on time.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader who balances production demands with safety, quality, employee development, and cost control.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise production supervisors, leads, and assigned production personnel.

• Set clear expectations and hold employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and performance.

• Coach, train, and evaluate employees; assist with hiring, development, and disciplinary action.

• Build a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Production and Scheduling

• Plan and coordinate daily production to meet completion dates, adjusting priorities to protect on-time delivery.

• Work with Production Control to schedule shop areas and maximize labor, equipment, and facility capacity.

• Keep materials flowing, partnering with Detailing and Purchasing so materials arrive when needed.

• Eliminate bottlenecks, delays, and unnecessary downtime.

• Adjust staffing and shift resources between areas as workload requires.


Performance and Cost

• Track productivity, labor utilization, scrap, rework, and other key indicators; report results to management.

• Control production costs and shop supplies within budget.

• Set production standards and drive improvements that raise output and reduce cost.


Safety and Quality

• Enforce safety policies and EH&S requirements and promote a strong safety culture.

• Partner with Safety on concerns, incidents, and corrective actions.

• Ensure customer specifications are met and address defects, rework, and scrap.

• Lead root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative actions.


Equipment and Materials

• Maintain preventative maintenance practices with Maintenance and escalate equipment issues promptly.

• Support inventory accuracy and adherence to transactional procedures.

• Keep production records accurate and shop areas organized and safe for material handling.


Leadership

• Communicate goals, priorities, and schedule changes to supervisors and employees.

• Coach supervisors and leads on leadership, accountability, and problem resolution.

• Serve on the plant leadership team and cover assigned Plant Manager duties in the Plant Manager’s absence.

• Ensure compliance with company policies and facility standards; perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

   

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Proven leadership, coaching, and conflict-resolution ability.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to prioritize and manage competing demands in a fast-paced shop.

• Ability to interpret production data, identify root causes, and act on them.

• Working knowledge of steel fabrication, material flow, and production scheduling.

• Ability to read blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication documents.

• Effective collaboration with Production Control, Detailing, Purchasing, Quality, Maintenance, and Safety.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and production or business software.

• Sound judgment, discretion, and professional representation of Alliance Steel.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Five or more years in steel manufacturing, metal fabrication, or similar industrial manufacturing.

• Supervisory experience in manufacturing, including accountability for schedules, labor, materials, quality, and performance.


Preferred

• Degree in Manufacturing, Operations Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.

• Experience with steel sheets, trim, components, or similar fabricated materials.

• Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or other continuous improvement experience.

• Experience with production planning, inventory, and preventative maintenance programs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Ability to work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to heat, noise, and metal fumes.

· Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and climb ladders or platforms for extended periods.

· Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
