Description

OBJECTIVE

The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) supports the Store Manager in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the store and lumberyard to ensure a safe, efficient, and customer-focused environment. This role helps drive sales, supervises staff, maintains inventory, and ensures compliance with company standards for service, safety, and operations. The ASM serves as a hands-on leader, providing direction to associates, resolving issues, and stepping in for the Store Manager when needed.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Supervision 

  • Assist the Store Manager in leading and developing all store and yard associates.
  • Provide coaching, training, and performance input to ensure team success.
  • Maintain staffing coverage and assist with scheduling to support business needs.
  • Serve as acting Store Manager in the SM’s absence.

Customer Service & Sales Support

  • Deliver exceptional customer service to contractors, walk-in customers, and B2B clients.
  • Assist in resolving escalated customer issues related to orders, returns, or product quality.
  • Support sales teams by ensuring timely communication regarding special orders, product arrivals, and service issues.
  • Conduct store and yard walkthroughs to verify merchandising, cleanliness, and safety.

Operational Support & Inventory Management

  • Oversee receiving, stocking, staging, and fulfillment of customer and delivery orders.
  • Ensure accurate inventory counts through participation in cycle counts and physical inventory.
  • Partner with the Store Manager and Purchasing Agent to maintain proper inventory levels.
  • Monitor yard flow and ensure orders are pulled, bunked, and staged accurately and efficiently.

Financial & Administrative Duties

  • Support the Store Manager in monitoring labor hours, expense control, and shrink.
  • Assist with tracking store performance metrics and preparing reports.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance customer and associate experiences.

Safety & Equipment Oversight 

  • Enforce safety standards in compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and local regulations.
  • Conduct and oversee daily forklift and equipment inspections.
  • Promote and maintain a clean, organized, and safe store and yard environment.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret invoices, tickets, and inventory reports
  • Solid organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of lumber, building materials, and construction supplies preferred
  • Computer literacy and ability to use inventory and POS systems
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or Russian/Ukrainian) preferred

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3–5 years of experience in retail, building materials, or construction-related role
  • 1–3 years of supervisory or lead experience required
  • Forklift certification (OSHA-compliant) required or ability to obtain
  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL Class B preferred

PHYSICAL & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, and climbing
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and overtime as needed
  • Regularly exposed to noise, dust, mechanical equipment, and vehicle traffic

SALARY RANGE

$70,000 - $90,000 DOE
