About the Position

The Port Engineer is responsible for the hands-on maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of The Jankovich Company’s tugboats and barges based in San Pedro and San Diego.

This position performs and coordinates preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance and repairs; troubleshoots equipment failures; and works with outside contractors and shipyards when specialized or major repairs are required.

This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced marine or heavy-equipment mechanic who can independently diagnose problems, perform repairs, and help keep our vessels safe, reliable, and operational.

Compensation

$40.00 to $48.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

As a Member of the Team, You Will:

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs on tugboats and barges, including diesel engines, generators, pumps, hydraulic systems, piping, and related vessel equipment. 
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other vessel-system problems and determine appropriate repair or corrective action. 
  • Perform repairs, rebuilds, component replacements, adjustments, installations, and other work necessary to maintain vessel machinery and equipment. 
  • Respond to equipment failures and other unplanned or urgent maintenance needs and perform repairs necessary to safely return equipment or vessels to service. 
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate maintenance and repair records in Helm Connect or similar systems. 
  • Coordinate specialized repairs and drydock work with shipyards, contractors, and service technicians. 
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. 
  • Source and maintain parts, tools, and critical vessel spare-parts inventory. 
  • Perform equipment testing and checks to help ensure vessels are ready to safely return to service.

 

We Require That You Have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Five or more years of hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engines and related mechanical equipment and systems. 
  • Technical training, certification, or a recognized credential in diesel engine repair, mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenance, marine engineering, or a related field. 
  • Experience with diesel engines, generators, pumps, hydraulic systems, fuel and cooling systems, piping, and related heavy-duty or marine equipment. 
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to independently diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repairs. 
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, equipment diagrams, and manufacturer specifications. 
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. 
  • TWIC, or the ability to obtain and maintain one.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining and repairing commercial tugboats, barges, workboats, or other commercial vessels. 
  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with a QMED, DDE, or other relevant engineering endorsement. 
  • Relevant STCW Engine Department training or endorsement. 
  • Manufacturer training or certification on Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, EMD, or comparable equipment. 
  • Experience with Helm Connect or a comparable maintenance management system. 
  • Confined-space entry training. 
  • AWS Certified Welder (CW) certification or comparable recognized welding certification applicable to repair and fabrication work.

Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based in San Pedro, California, with occasional travel to San Diego and other Company operating locations as needed. 

Work is performed aboard tugboats and barges and in dockside and shipyard environments. The position requires the ability to climb ladders, work in confined or restricted spaces and on uneven or moving surfaces, perform physically demanding mechanical work, and lift up to 50 pounds.
