Patient Care Technician Trainee (On-Call)

PAY RATE: Patient Care Technician Trainee - $18/hr. Patient Care Technician range: $30/hr. to $36/hr.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Patient Care Technician collaborates with providers at the Hyperbaric Treatment and Wound Care Center (HTC) to facilitate patient care and coordinate treatment activities; assists during evaluation of patients; prepares medical charts; prepares chamber for use; and assures patient comfort and chamber orientation are accomplished efficiently. Provides education to patients and families. Serves as Care Provider during daily scheduled and emergent treatments. Maintains credentials and competencies, participates in HTC training, safety drills, monthly meetings, and contributing to the monthly on-call schedule. Be available to work a minimum of 6 assigned hours and 4 call shifts per month. Maintain continuous availability and 30 minute response time to HTC while on-call.
The Patient Care Technician starts as a Trainee with a training wage of $18/hr and will be promoted to a Patient Care Technician I upon successful completion of the trainee period. The trainee period includes completion of a Didactic Care Provider Course provided by HTC, passing a hyperbaric physical exam, and in-chamber pressurization test. These steps are required before advancing to the Clinical Provider Course. The duration of training varies with availability and base knowledge of new hires.
There are three levels of Patient Care Technician I, II, and III, each with increasing levels of responsibility and required licensure/certification, including ACLS for the Patient Care Technician II and III positions.
LOCATION: Kuakini Medical Center, Hale Pulama Mau Building Ground Floor
On-call: 12-24 hours/week during training ($18.00/hr), minimum of 6 hours/week and 4 on-call shifts
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education/Training/Experience
Minimum:
- High school graduate/equivalent or higher
- Credentialled in a clinical specialty or currently in training: Medical Assistant (MA), Nursing Assistant (NA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Dive Medical Technician (DMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Registered Nurse (RN), Mobile Intensive Care Technician/Paramedic (MICT/EMT-P), Critical Care Nurse (CCRN), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner (APRN), Physician’s Assistant (PA), Respiratory Therapist (RT), or other relevant specialty
- Current Certification for BLS from American Heart Association (Required within 90 days of employment)
- Enrollment in a Didactic/Clinical Care Provider Course as provided by HTC or equivalent Hyperbaric facility required to maintain employment. (Completion of this course required for Patient Care Technician I, II, and III level positions.)
Preferred:
- SCUBA Certification
- 1+ years of experience working in a health care or related facility
- Current certification from the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Certified Hyperbaric Technician / Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) certification through the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT)
Skills/Knowledge
Minimum:
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Google Suite
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
- Familiarity with hyperbaric environment, including but not limited to hyperbaric chamber ancillary equipment, communication devices
- Familiarity and experience with clinical equipments, such as BP sphygmomanometer, blood glucose monitor
- Working knowledge of electronic medical record systems
JOB CONDITIONS
- Ability to work inside a chamber environment that is enclosed, pressurized and of small quarters.
Due to safety concerns, individuals who are pregnant cannot enter the hyperbaric chamber. This restriction is based on the potential risks associated with hyperbaric oxygen exposure during pregnancy.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Requires ability to lift 100 pounds (assisting incapacitated patients).
