Delta Dental of Iowa invites applications for a Lead or Senior Software Developer to contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions that support Delta Dental of Iowa’s healthcare insurance operations. This role focuses on implementing scalable and secure applications under guidance from senior team members. The ideal candidate demonstrates solid technical skills, a commitment to learning, and the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams to deliver user-centric solutions. This hybrid position is located in Johnston, Iowa and not eligible for visa sponsorship. This position may be filled at a Level III (Lead) or Senior, depending on qualifications.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the design and successful implementation of scalable, secure, performant, HIPAA-compliant software solutions.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate complex business needs into scalable and maintainable technical specifications.
  • Demonstrate initiative and thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments, effectively managing deliverables with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines.
  • Lead and contribute to estimation practices, including story pointing and backlog refinement, to support predictable delivery and informed planning.
  • Mentor other developers and contribute to code reviews, architecture discussions, and agreed upon processes, guidelines and best practices.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party technologies where appropriate.
  • Champions modern engineering practices in alignment with company direction, including automation, DevOps methodologies, CI/CD pipeline development, and infrastructure as code (IaC) to accelerate delivery and improve reliability.
  • Participate in cloud migration or modernization efforts deemed appropriate.
  • Ensure application performance, security, and compliance through proactive monitoring and testing.
  • Create and maintain clear, concise, and comprehensive technical documentation, including system architecture, APIs, deployment processes and other systems and process information to support knowledge sharing and onboarding.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of system architecture by collaborating on department- and team-level technical decisions, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Provide on-call support when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

For Software Developer III (Lead):

  

Hiring Specifications: 

Required

  1. Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field with 5+ years of professional experience in application development; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
  2. Exposure to common Java based web technologies & frameworks.
  3. Advanced proficiency in SQL and relational database design
  4. Hands-on experience with modern version control systems (e.g., Git).
  5. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  6. Ability to demonstrate initiative and thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments, effectively managing deliverables with supervision and under tight deadlines.
  7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  8. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

Preferred  

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  2. Experience designing and developing applications using modern programming languages such as Java, C#, or Python, databases, and sql. 
  3. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
  4. Familiarity with healthcare or insurance systems, including claims processing, enrollment, or regulatory compliance.
