School Based Therapist 

Valley Health Services, Children's & Adolescent Office 

Full-Time, 40 Hours/Week 

$50,000-$60,000/Year 

SUMMARY: Provides clinical behavioral health services to children and adolescents within a school or classroom setting. The School-based Therapist provides assessment, individual and/or family therapy, behavioral health interventions, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and other clinical services designed to address students' behavioral health needs. The therapist works collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and other providers to support the student's emotional, behavioral, and educational functioning.

This position is assigned to a Trumbull County ESC school or classroom setting based on student, school, and agency needs.

SCHEDULE: The standard work week is 40 hours, with regular school hours generally aligning with the assigned school schedule. Exact working hours are dictated by client, school, and agency needs. Evening hours may occasionally be required. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., as needed. Summer hours will be scheduled with supervisors.

School-based employees will follow the school schedule as assigned.

Eligible school-based employees will also accrue vacation time, which may be limited to use during the summer while school is out of session, in accordance with agency policy.

SUPERVISOR: Clinical Coordinator or Designee

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide individual, family, and/or group therapy to school-aged students within the educational setting as clinically appropriate.

• Complete behavioral health assessments and identify presenting problems, strengths, needs, and appropriate treatment interventions.

• Develop, implement, and monitor Individual Service Plans based on assessed needs and identified treatment goals.

• Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions appropriate to the student's age, developmental level, diagnosis, and treatment needs.

• Provide behavioral health interventions and support to assist students in developing and maintaining effective and productive behaviors within the school environment.

• Provide crisis intervention and appropriate clinical support when students experience emotional or behavioral difficulties.

• Utilize Trauma-Informed Care when appropriate with clients/students.

• Monitor student progress toward treatment goals and modify interventions as clinically appropriate.

• Make appropriate referrals to additional behavioral health, medical, educational, and community-based services when indicated.

• Collaborate with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, behavioral health providers, and community agencies to coordinate care and support student needs.

• Participate in school meetings, treatment team meetings, consultations, and other collaborative activities as appropriate.

• Maintain productive and professional relationships with school personnel, students, families, and other agency staff.

• Work effectively within a school or classroom setting while following school rules, regulations, procedures, and the direction of school administration when necessary.

• Document all clinical encounters in the Electronic Health Record. Utilize appropriate documentation for billing and encounters and maintain required productivity standards.

• Attend all trainings required by the school, Axess Family Services, and/or any other required training.

• Comply with agency policies and procedures, COA regulations, federal and state requirements, professional licensing requirements, and applicable ethical standards.

• Maintain current professional licensure and complete all continuing education and professional development requirements necessary to maintain licensure and agency eligibility.

• Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in accordance with agency and school policies and applicable laws and regulations.

• Job assignment is contingent upon partnering with a school and may be modified or severed by the school or AxessPointe based on school, student, or agency needs. Continued employment is at the sole discretion of the employer.

• Perform other assigned and related duties specific and customary to the department in which they are assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Master’s degree – counseling, social work, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field 

• The position requires skills and knowledge in the areas of behavioral health, child and adolescent mental health, assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, behavioral modification, crisis intervention, and the educational process.

• Ability to respond appropriately to crisis or emergency situations.

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and establish and maintain effective therapeutic and professional relationships with students, their families, educational personnel, community providers, and agency staff.

• Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively, reliably, and dependably, and the ability to manage available resources to carry out assigned tasks.

• Must be able to meet agency requirements for criminal background check, including Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation requirements.

• Prior behavioral health experience required. 

Preferred:

• Prior clinical experience working with children and adolescents in a school, outpatient, community, or behavioral health setting.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

• Unrestricted LPC/LPCC or LSW/LISW license to practice in the State of Ohio

• Unrestricted State of Ohio driver’s license

The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate. Stress level can be high at times.
