Role purpose
- Agronomic traits are one of our key research focus areas. We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join the Agronomic Traits Team at the Syngenta Beijing Innovation Center, based in Beijing.
- The primary responsibility of this position is to provide expertise and scientific innovation in molecular biology, plant physiology, and crop genetics; understand interactions among traits; and provide rationally designed solutions for key agronomic traits of interest for major crops.
- This role will involve close collaborations with multiple China and global R&D teams.
Accountabilities
- Develop rationally designed solutions for key agronomic traits, such as yield improvement, abiotic stress tolerance, plant density tolerance, plant architecture optimization, and quality traits, driving innovative and cutting-edge research and development.
- Design, execute, and manage agronomic trait-related R&D projects for Syngenta globally and within China as a core team member.
- Build and lead cross-functional project teams, coordinating and resolving resource allocation conflicts across projects and departments.
- Develop and complete agronomic trait phenotyping and characterization.
- Identify, troubleshoot, resolve, and continuously optimize technical and other project-related challenges.
- Provide technical support to SBC and other global units to ensure critical milestones are met
- Evaluate the technical work of external collaborators and, for established collaborations, represent Syngenta in overseeing project execution and deliverables.
- Conduct all work in compliance with company quality management, intellectual property, and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) guidelines, while maintaining accurate and complete experimental records.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Plant Physiology, Crop Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, or a related field, with postdoctoral training at a leading domestic or international university/research institute. Candidates should have a strong publication record demonstrating research capability and at least 10 years of experience in field-crop trait research and gene discovery.
- Strong background in plant physiology and biochemistry, with the ability to address scientific challenges using molecular genetics approaches.
- Solid understanding of modern breeding technologies, as well as the company’s current R&D pipeline and commercial products, with the ability to quickly identify key issues and propose effective solutions.
- Proven experience in gene discovery, function validation, trait improvement, or breeding related to agronomic traits in major field crops such as corn, rice, and soybean, supported by extensive greenhouse and field trial experience and strong knowledge.
- Experience in bioinformatics, crop genetics, omics data analysis, or programming is preferred.
- Experience leading R&D project initiation, execution, and research teams is preferred.
- Results-oriented with strong attention to detail and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Responsible, proactive, and able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with strong communication skills.
- Fluent in both English and Chinese, with strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for a professional working environment.
