About the Role
 

Bascom Hunter is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the design, development, analysis, and testing of aerospace and defense systems. This position provides hands-on engineering experience across a range of mechanical technologies, including thermal management systems, precision rotating machinery, mechanical packaging, and ruggedized electronic systems.


The intern will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams and contribute to projects throughout the development lifecycle, from early-stage concepts and analysis through prototyping, testing, and documentation.


Bascom Hunter provides custom solutions to the Department of Defense and aerospace markets, with capabilities spanning advanced electronics, communications, RF systems, environmental control, thermal management, power, and other mission-critical technologies.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Develop 3D models, mechanical designs, and packaging concepts using SolidWorks or other CAD tools.
  • Support structural, thermal, and fluid analysis to evaluate and optimize system performance.
  • Assist with thermal system and precision rotating machinery development, including compressor-related projects.
  • Conduct research and help formulate solutions to technical and engineering challenges.
  • Support prototype fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical components and systems.
  • Assist with experiments, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of test results.
  • Evaluate materials and manufacturing processes based on performance, weight, durability, environmental, and production requirements.
  • Support the development and buildout of engineering laboratory and test capabilities.
  • Prepare engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, analysis reports, test documentation, and technical reports.
  • Work with lead engineers and project managers to support project schedules and technical objectives.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines to support integrated system development.
  • Support designs intended to meet applicable aerospace and defense industry standards and customer requirements.


Qualifications:

 

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Junior or Senior undergraduate standing preferred.
  • Proficiency or experience with CAD and 3D modeling software; SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience with mechanical design, prototyping, fabrication, or testing.
  • Knowledge of thermal systems, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, or precision rotating machinery.
  • Familiarity with materials and manufacturing processes used in aerospace or defense applications.
  • Experience with engineering analysis or simulation tools.
  • Programming or data analysis experience.
  • Familiarity with aerospace and defense industry standards and requirements.
  • Previous internship, research, laboratory, project team, or other relevant work experience.


This is a paid internship opportunity with both full-time and part-time schedules available. Summer interns typically work full-time, with opportunities for part-time work during the academic year based on business needs and intern availability. Start and end dates are flexible based on the intern's academic schedule.


The internship provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on real aerospace and defense engineering programs and may provide a pathway to future employment opportunities with Bascom Hunter.
