Advanced Social Work Practicum or Mental Health Counseling Internship in our Brain Health Department

About the Opportunity:

Easterseals Iowa's Brain Health Department offers advanced clinical practicum and internship experiences for MSW students and Mental Health Counseling students seeking intensive behavioral health training.

Students gain hands-on experience across services such as Outpatient Therapy, Crisis Stabilization Services, and Multisystemic Therapy (MST), working alongside experienced clinicians in both office-based and community settings.


Advanced placements are typically completed over two semesters and range from approximately 600 to 800 hours, depending on your academic program requirements. This placement is best suited for students who are interested in community-based behavioral health services, nonprofit healthcare, and serving diverse populations across multiple treatment settings.


Learning Opportunities:

Students may have opportunities to:

  • Provide individual, family, and group therapy under supervision
  • Conduct behavioral health assessments and treatment planning
  • Participate in crisis assessments and intervention
  • Support Multisystemic Therapy interventions
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment teams
  • Develop competence in community-based clinical practice


Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in an accredited MSW or Mental Health Counseling program
  • Eligibility for an advanced, specialist, or clinical placement through the student's academic program
  • Interest in behavioral health and clinical practice
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to provide services in community settings when appropriate


Application Process:

Applications are accepted in the fall, and placement decisions for the academic year are generally made by the end of the previous calendar year. Placement availability is limited based on supervisory capacity. Applicants participate in an initial screening interview and a second interview with the Director of Brain Health, Tony Raymer.
