About the Role

Description

The Basketball Referee is responsible for officiating youth basketball games in a fair, consistent, and professional manner. This role ensures that all games are conducted according to league rules while promoting sportsmanship, safety, and a positive experience for all participants.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Officiate basketball games in accordance with league rules and guidelines  
  • Ensure fair play and enforce rules consistently  
  • Maintain control of the game in a calm and professional manner  
  • Monitor player safety and stop play when necessary  
  • Address conflicts or disputes respectfully and effectively
  • Communicate clearly with coaches, players, and program staff  
  • Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled games  
  • Assist with basic set-up and organization of game play as needed  

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Knowledge of basketball rules and game play required  
  • Previous refereeing or officiating experience preferred  
  • Strong decision-making and conflict resolution skills  
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure  
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills  
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work evenings and/or weekends  
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)  

WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING

  • Travel between Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required. Must meet the insurance standards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles.
  • This position may be assigned to any sites within the Club as needed to accommodate changes in programming, staffing, or operational requirements.
  • Hours are based on school calendar and attendance patterns/trends – evening hours are required during the school year; hours will vary during summer and school breaks; occasional weekend hours are required

The position requires the ability to maintain a stationary position and engage in physical activities such as moving, bending, reaching, and positioning. Work environments may vary, encompassing both indoor and outdoor conditions based on activity locations. Additionally, interactions with youth and adults may involve moderate to high noise levels during activities. Physical exertion may be necessary to move and transport supplies and equipment.
