About the Role

Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Department: Emergency Department
  • Reports To: Chief Nursing Officer
  • FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct patient care utilizing the nursing process in a fast-paced emergency care environment. The RN performs assessment, triage, treatment, monitoring, patient education, and care coordination for patients across the lifespan.

Essential Functions

Emergency Nursing Care

  • Provides direct patient care utilizing the nursing process.
  • Delivers emergency care across the lifespan.
  • Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and treatments.

Triage, Assessment & Clinical Judgment

  • Performs triage according to established protocols.
  • Prioritizes care based on acuity and clinical need.
  • Monitors patient condition and communicates significant findings.

Communication & Patient Advocacy

  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Provides patient/family education and discharge instructions.
  • Maintains confidentiality and supports patient rights.

Medication Administration & Treatment Management

  • Administers medications and treatments in accordance with provider orders and policy.
  • Monitors patient response and identifies adverse reactions.

Trauma Care, Emergency Response & Preparedness

  • Participate in trauma activations, resuscitations, and emergency response activities.
  • Supports workplace violence prevention, disaster response, and emergency preparedness initiatives.

Admissions, Transfers & Discharge Coordination

  • Facilitates admissions, transfers, referrals, and discharges.
  • Coordinates EMTALA-compliant transfers and continuity of care.

Documentation, Quality & Compliance

  • Maintains accurate EHR documentation.
  • Supports quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance activities.

Workplace Safety & Team Collaboration

  • Supports a safe environment through collaboration, de-escalation, and teamwork.

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program
  • Current unrestricted West Virginia RN license 
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Preferred: One year of emergency nursing experience; TNCC, CEN, or other trauma/emergency certification.
