About the Role

Description

We’re looking for energetic and mission-aligned Recreational Gymnastics Instructors to support our growing program at the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester. Available as full-time, part-time, or per diem roles, these coaching positions are ideal for individuals who love working with children and are committed to creating a safe, structured, and empowering learning environment.

As a Recreational Instructor, you’ll lead skill-based classes for youth ages 3–12, following progressive lesson plans that emphasize physical fitness, safety, and fun. You'll support the day-to-day instructional rhythm of the program by helping set up equipment, spotting athletes, maintaining a clean and organized gym, and reinforcing positive class behavior. Whether you're new to coaching or bring years of experience, you’ll play a vital role in building confidence and movement skills in our youngest athletes — all while contributing to the YWCA’s larger mission of equity, empowerment, and community impact. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate gymnastics classes for children ages 3–12
  •  Implement structured lesson plans that support skill progression, fitness, and fun across Vault, Bars, Beam, and Floor
  •  Provide positive behavior management and foster an inclusive, encouraging class environment
  •  Assist with class setup and breakdown, ensuring all equipment is safe, clean, and properly maintained
  •  Actively spot gymnasts and provide corrections to support learning and injury prevention
  •  Communicate with families and caregivers about student progress and program updates
  •  Collaborate with fellow coaches to align curriculum, classroom strategies, and program goals
  •  Support seasonal events such as recreational showcases, family engagement days, and community promotions

Requirements

  Essential Experience:

  • Entry-Level Candidates: At least 6-12 months experience working with children in a recreational, camp, classroom, or athletic setting
  • Mid-Advanced Candidates: 1–3+ years of gymnastics instruction experience in a structured recreational program, youth athletics, or physical education
  • Experience working with children ages 3–12 in group or class settings
  • Prior exposure to progressive skill development, safety spotting, or curriculum-based instruction preferred

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Current high school students aged 16+ with valid   working papers are welcome to apply (for per diem or part-time roles)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in education, kinesiology, physical education, or a   related field preferred for advanced or full-time positions


Additional Qualifications: 


  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
  • USAG Recreational Coach Certification (preferred; training support available for eligible candidates)
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and safely spot athletes during instruction
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with children and families
  • Positive, team-oriented attitude and a commitment to creating inclusive learning environments
  • Familiarity with basic technology tools such as email, attendance systems, or class management apps (training provided)
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding the YWCA’s mission of equity, empowerment, and inclusive youth development 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

Schedule: Part-Time OR Per diem, up to 20 Hours Per Week 

Compensation: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience

Benefits: This position is not eligible for benefits.
