Donor Care Specialist (Phlebotomist)

1. Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, internal and external, according to the hospital’s customer service standards.
2. Makes recommendations for workflow practices, improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.  
3. Assists with unloading and loading supplies and equipment to and from blood drive sites.
4. Sets up equipment at the beginning of blood drive and breaks down equipment at the end of the blood drive.
5. Performs daily quality control prior to the start of the blood drive.
6. Performs donor screening to ensure donor’s eligibility per CCHC, CDC, FDA, AABB, and CAP standards.
7. Performs all aspects of whole blood collections on offsite blood drives and in donor center.
8. Prepares and labels blood components and samples for testing.  
9. Performs accurate documentation on all blood donor records and data entry including donor deferrals into the computer system and ensures all quality control standards are met. 
10. Packs units in transport cooler with ice and packs samples for testing for driver/courier to bring to donor center.
11. Performs blood component processing.
12. Assists with donor recruitment. 
13. Performs daily inventory and packs required donor care supplies in totes for blood drives. Picks up supplies from donor center as needed. Sends a list of supplies to be ordered to the Supervisor or designee.  
14. Obtains appropriate blood specimens from donors and patients. 
15. Performs therapeutic phlebotomy in the donor center as needed.
16. Maintains workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff. 
17. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and  procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.  
18. Assists Section Supervisors and Pathologist in maintaining programs including but not limited to: quality control, instrument calibration, quality assurance an improvement and development of new methodologies.
19. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 
20. Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
21. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

APHERESIS TECH ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all aspects of apheresis platelet collections, included but not limited to: verifying all information of donor, determining eligibility, performing donor history, performs apheresis procedure, performs aftercare of the platelet donor, and processes the units in accordance with department policy and procedures maintaining high customer service.
2. Perform quality control, instrument calibration, quality assurance and improvement, and validation of new methodologies.
3. Maintains a list of prospective platelet donors.
4. Recruits donors for both whole blood and Apheresis collections. 
5. Prepares reports and statistical data of platelet donor program.
6. Assists in the training of new staff on collection processes and functions within the department.  
7. Act as a resource for staff when questions or problems arise.
8. Reviews daily QC, cooler transport logs, deferrals, donor cards, donor adverse reactions, and other documents for accuracy, completeness, and in a timely manner.
9. Assists with writing and revising SOPs as needed.
10. Assists in responding to donor/patient complications in a safe, timely, and professional manner per CCHC policy.

Donor Care Specialist – Grade S10A, Job Code: 8255

• Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
• Minimum of High School Diploma/GED or higher.
• Meet one of the following qualifications:
  • Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience as a donor phlebotomist.
• Working knowledge of blood groups and Rh types and donation procedures.
• Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and to work under pressure.
• (Preferred) National Certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy program.
• (BLS) - Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 90 days of position start, offered within).
• Proficiency in using computers/laptops.
• (PBT or DPT) – PBT Certification through either NHA or ASCP, which must be maintained, or Current Donor Phlebotomy (DPT) certification with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), if already obtained prior to June 2024. Certification can be obtained within the first 12 months of hire.
  
  
  Apheresis Tech - Job Code:8271  Grade: S11A
   
• Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

• Minimum of High School Diploma/GED or higher.
• Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and to work under pressure.
• Minimum 6 months of experience as a platelet apheresis tech or minimal 6 months of donor phlebotomy, performed a minimum of 200 successful whole blood collections, and minimal QNS rate.
• Working knowledge of blood groups and Rh types and donation procedures.
• (BLS) - Current Basic Life Support certification (or acquired within 6 months of position) and must maintain certification.

•  (PBT or DPT) – PBT Certification through either NHA or ASCP, which must be maintained, or Current Donor Phlebotomy (DPT) certification with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), if already obtained prior to June 2024. Current Donor Phlebotomy Technician, DPT (ASCP) Certification required. Certification can be obtained within the first 6 months of hire.
