Position Summary:

Provide assistance and support for physicians and other providers to assure timely, appropriate, quality patient care is provided. Responsible and accountable for compliance with regulations mandated by governmental agencies as well as Policies and Procedures established by the Board of Directors of SMSC.

30% Patient Care

Call patients to exam room and do five point check to ensure correct identity of patient. Take full vital signs and record in EHR. Calculate BMI and document accordingly. Reconcile medications, review allergies and patient/family history. Record MU measures as appropriate per age of patient. Set up for procedures. Based on reason for visit, appropriately prepare and position patient for provider’s examination. Patient must be prepared for provider 100% of the time. Paperwork needed for visit is completed by patient and/or medical assistant as appropriate and available for provider’s review or completion. Paper work must be prepared 100% of the time. Perform screenings or tests as directed by provider. Assist with procedures; administer injections and medications as ordered by provider. Document daily in EHR. Electronically order lab and radiology services prior to patient receiving services. Take care of patient needs or requests promptly including, but not limited to, any tasks, prescription refills, referrals, insurance forms, and specialist appointments. Medical Assistant is responsible for scheduling diagnostic tests using standard protocols adopted by the clinic and informing patient of proper preparation for diagnostic tests.


25% Assist Provider

Responsible for assisting provider in caring for patients as directed by provider. It is Medical Assistant responsibility to insure that provider completes tasks, documents in EHR, answers correspondence, signs nursing home, home health and hospice orders, reviews patient lab work and notifies patients of results daily. Provider may delegate patient notification responsibility to Medical Assistant.


15% Tasks

Any and all patient correspondence must be documented in EHR by receptionist or clinical staff. Check and respond to portal messages daily. Medical Assistant is responsible for assuring that all tasks are answered in a timely manner.


15% Charting/Documentation

Working in EHR system entering, accessing, and retrieving patient data. HIPAA and Privacy laws must be followed to protect the patient’s privacy. Record patient vital signs, injections or medications given and all other patient contact in EHR. Patient demographics must be entered 100% of the time. Generate and task and/or fax referral thank you letters for any referrals daily. Document referring provider in EHR. Enter patient pharmacy in patient via patient portal when possible. All documentation in EHR must be accurate, complete, and contain all required information. Injections/immunizations/procedures must be documented daily with required information. Tablets must be secured daily. Medical Assistant is responsible for the tablet assigned to them. 


10% Stocking and Cleaning

Responsible for keeping exam and treatment rooms adequately and appropriately stocked with medical supplies. Keep injectable and oral medications stocked. Check expiration dates. Label all open vials with date opened and initials. Check refrigerator temperature twice daily and maintain log. If crash cart is maintained in department, medications are restocked immediately upon use and crash cart is checked monthly. Drug cabinets are cleaned, organized and checked monthly. Nurse station is clean and organized. Exam rooms are cleaned after each patient and disinfected as appropriate and at the end of each day. Instruments are cleaned and sterilized daily. Cleaning is done in compliance with clinic policy and procedures and in compliance with OSHA Standards including Standards for Blood Borne Pathogens and HazCom Standards. 100% compliance at all times.


5% Customer Service/other duties assigned

100% of the time -Responsible for treating others politely and with respect. Must always remain professional, polite and considerate of patient needs. Must have the ability to listen and respond concisely, yet accurately to questions asked. Responsible for problem solving and not letting patient expectations go unmet. Demonstrate a desire to be responsive, make others feel welcome and that you are eager to help them. Get along well with patients, providers and co-workers.


I/9: Access to email, web surfing, work order tracking system and interoffice instant messaging. Limited access to patient insurance and financial data. Full access to all medical data specified as pertinent to job duties. Ability to add information, edit or delete within an unlocked encounter in limited areas of patient electronic health record. No ability to modify or delete data entered by another user. May have access to view and print patient data in Orchard Harvest and PACS, as provided by Lab/Xray department managers, as needed for job function. (Clinical Dept Mgr, Admin Asst to Clinical Dept Mgr, Back Offc/Clinical Staff, PR/Mktg/Compliance, Administrative Coordinator, Scribes)

Requirements

Position Qualifications:

  • Acknowledgement of Medical Assistant status
  • Current CPR certificate
  • Two years experience as a medical assistant in a clinical setting a plus
  • Physically able to lift and carry 50 pounds
  • Physically able to stand for prolonged periods of time, up to eight hours a day
  • Perform job duties in a stressful environment and maintain professional demeanor and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations
  • Good communication skills with ability to interact with a diverse patient base. Bilingual in Spanish a plus. 
  • Maintain regular attendance and meet the attendance requirements of the job
  • Think rationally and reason logically
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality
  • Knowledge of technology based systems
  • Demonstrate clinical competency
