JOB SUMMARY: The Business Intelligence Engineer is responsible for making Coldspring’s data usable by the business. Coldspring is building a medallion data architecture — a bronze layer of raw source data, a silver layer in our SQL data warehouse, and a gold layer of curated, business-facing data. This position is embedded in our cross-functional BI team, where a project manager handles intake and prioritization, and is responsible for the technical design and delivery of the gold layer, the certified data sources the company relies on, and the KPIs, dashboards, and reporting used to make business decisions. This position also owns our dbt environment and the transformation logic that moves data from bronze, to silver, to gold. Key skills for this position include SQL, dbt, dimensional data modeling, Tableau, and the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical business users. 

Coldspring has spent the past two years building the foundation for this role — a working data warehouse sourced from JD Edwards, with a dedicated developer maintaining the integration. The gold layer is greenfield. This is the first position dedicated to making that data usable across the company, so you would be establishing the patterns, the standards, and the certification practice rather than inheriting someone else’s. You would be working with people who know the business well and want better access to their data. 

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

• Set up, configure, and maintain the dbt environment used to transform Coldspring data 
• Build and maintain the dbt models that move data from the bronze layer, to silver, to gold, including data quality tests and monitoring 
• Work with business users, alongside the BI team, to translate business questions into data requirements and deliver answers at the level each requester needs 
• Design and build the gold layer: curated, business-facing data models, including conformed and pre-joined data sets spanning sales, production, shipping, and other domains 
• Establish standards for naming, testing, documentation, and version control of transformation code 
• Publish, certify, and manage the company’s certified data sources, including their names, descriptions, owners, refresh schedules, and the data dictionary and metric definitions behind them 
• Own the certification standard: what qualifies as certified, how changes are handled, and when a source is retired 
• Centralize business calculations and metric definitions in the data layer, not in individual reports 
• Build KPIs, dashboards, and recurring reporting for teams that cannot build their own 
• Identify data quality and data capture gaps and help resolve them with source system owners 
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the underlying data warehouse alongside the BI developer 
• Work as an embedded member of the cross-functional BI team, receiving prioritized work through IT and the team’s project manager, while owning the technical approach and design decisions 
• Partner with the project manager on scoping and effort estimates for incoming requests 
• Provide guidance to business users on the certified data sources, including occasional informal training 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a related field preferred; an associate degree or demonstrated experience may be considered in place of a bachelor’s degree 
• 5+ years of combined experience in business intelligence, analytics engineering, or data engineering roles. Depth in the following matters more than years served: Advanced SQL, including writing, optimizing, and troubleshooting complex queries dbt, including standing up a project and owning model development, testing, and structure (2+ years hands-on), Dimensional data modeling (facts, dimensions, and grain), Git / source control, and hands-on front end visualization and dashboard development in a BI platform such as Tableau or Power BI 
• Experience with several of the following is preferred: Tableau specifically, including publishing and managing certified data sources, data sourced from a transactional ERP system (JD Edwards a plus), layered or medallion data architectures, modern data transformation and testing workflows, python or other scripting for data preparation 
• Ability to explain technical data concepts to a non-technical audience 
• Strong collaboration, relationship management, and communication skills 
• Works with business users to understand the requirements behind a request, and asks questions when they are unclear 
• Good judgment, logical thinker and detail oriented 
• Ability to drive projects to completion and flag blockers early 
• Manufacturing, production, or distribution industry experience preferred 

This is a representation of the position’s entire pay grade range. Starting pay is based on an individual’s skills, experience, and at the discretion of the hiring team.
