About The Company
The Virginia Spaceport Authority, a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, owns and operates the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS). This spaceport includes four launch pads, an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Airfield, a Payload Processing Facility (PPF), and an Integration and Control Facility (ICF). These facilities are located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Wallops Island.

SUMMARY

General Description: This internship focuses on graphic design and visual branding. The intern will assist in developing graphic design projects and external VSA media as well as other External Relations Department activities.

Responsibilities and Duties:  

  1. Assist in the design of digital and printed marketing materials.
  2. Interface with print shops to decide materials, dimensions, color, and other details regarding orders.
  3. Ensure proper VSA branding of presentations and documents. Design and edit PowerPoint presentations and other documents.
  4. Generate VSA visual media. Capture and edit photos.
  5. Assist in the design and implementation of awareness-raising campaigns. 
  6. Assist in other departmental activities such as events, spaceport tours, social media campaigns, and writing/editing.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

General Education:  

College: Current enrollment in an associate or bachelor’s degree program from an accredited college or university

Major:   Graphic Design, Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising

Job-Related Experience:

Formal graphic design education may be substituted for relevant job experience and vice versa. 

Certifications: None

Licenses, etc.:  Valid driver's license is necessary when operating a vehicle while on agency business. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Knowledge:

  • Fundamentals of graphic design
  • Knowledge of marketing and public relations principles
  • Experience with social media platforms desired

Skills:

  • Capability to turn data into attractive and readable visuals
  • Aptitude for learning software
  • Written and oral communication, presentation, organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be experienced in Adobe software with intermediate Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and InDesign skills
  • Must be experienced in Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint
  • Must understand, follow, and promote OSHA safety guidelines in the workplace

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability in active listening
  • Discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive information

Physical Demands: Work is light requiring lifting of computer equipment and involves typical office behaviors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds.

Specific vision abilities this job requires include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a typical office setting. 

Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for issuance of a NASA credential.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
