Sports Coordinator

Description
Under the direction of the Program & Wellness Director, the Sports Coordinator will assist with the organization and day-to-day operations of youth and adult sports programming, with primary responsibility for the YMCA Youth Basketball League. This position works closely with staff, volunteer coaches, officials, participants, and families to ensure programs are organized, safe, welcoming, and consistent with YMCA standards.
The Sports Coordinator will provide on-site leadership for assigned sports programs and assist with scheduling, volunteer coordination, program preparation, communication, and overall program operations. Evening and weekend availability is required seasonally.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Coordinates the day-to-day operations of assigned youth and adult sports programs in collaboration with the Program & Wellness Director.
- Provides on-site leadership for assigned sports programs, including games, evaluations, drafts, and other activities, ensuring programs operate safely, efficiently, and according to YMCA standards.
- Assists with the planning and coordination of rosters, practice and game schedules, officials, facilities, equipment, volunteers, and other program needs.
- Recruits, schedules, communicates with, and supports volunteer coaches, officials, and program volunteers. Works with the Program & Wellness Director to ensure required volunteer documentation and clearances are completed.
- Assists as a point of contact for participants, families, coaches, officials, and volunteers; communicates program information and responds appropriately to questions, concerns, and routine conflicts, involving the Program & Wellness Director as appropriate.
- Coordinates program and game-day operations, including facility and equipment preparation, volunteer coverage, scoreboard needs, fundraising activities, and other operational responsibilities necessary for successful programming.
- Works with the Program & Wellness Director to evaluate, promote, and grow sports programming and assists with the development and implementation of additional youth and adult sports opportunities.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with participants, families, volunteers, staff, and community members and performs other reasonably related duties necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the River Valley Regional YMCA.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in sports, recreation, coaching, or related programming preferred.
- Knowledge of basketball and other sports programming preferred.
- Experience working with children, families, and volunteers preferred.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately to questions, concerns, conflicts, and emergency situations.
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, abilities, and lifestyles.
- Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of applicable YMCA trainings and certifications, including CPR, First Aid, AED, Child Abuse Prevention, and other program-specific requirements.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required by assigned programs, including Saturdays during the Youth Basketball League season.
