I. SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the CEO & President, the Marketing & Public Relations Director is responsible for leading the strategic direction and day-to-day execution of Turtle Bay Exploration Park’s marketing, advertising, communications, and public relations efforts, including support for the Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge and other affiliated operations.
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for developing and implementing integrated marketing strategies that strengthen the Turtle Bay brand, grow attendance and revenue, promote exhibitions, programs and events, and support the organization’s mission and long-term goals.
The Director leads the Marketing & Public Relations team while also actively participating in campaign development, advertising, content creation, creative production, digital marketing, media relations, and other marketing activities.
II. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Develop the vision and direct the overall marketing, advertising, communications, and public relations strategies for Turtle Bay Exploration Park and the Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge in support of short- and long-term organizational goals, attendance objectives, and revenue projections.
• Lead, develop, and manage the Marketing & Public Relations team, including establishing priorities, assigning workloads, overseeing performance, supporting professional development, and ensuring successful completion of departmental projects and campaigns.
• Develop and execute integrated marketing campaigns for major exhibitions, events, educational programs, fundraising initiatives, membership, hospitality offerings, and other organizational activities.
• Lead marketing efforts for major attendance- and revenue-generating events and exhibitions, developing strategies to reach new and returning audiences through regional and destination marketing.
• Personally contribute to the execution of marketing initiatives, including digital advertising, social media, website content, email marketing, advertising creative, photography, videography, video editing, copywriting, and other content development as needed.
• Plan, manage, and optimize paid advertising campaigns across digital and traditional platforms, which may include social media, search, streaming television/video, broadcast television, radio, print, outdoor advertising, and other emerging platforms.
• Monitor campaign performance and audience data, using analytics and marketing research to evaluate effectiveness, optimize advertising investments, understand audience behavior, and inform future marketing strategies.
• Facilitate marketing research to assist the organization in developing and sustaining public programming that is integrated with Turtle Bay’s mission, vision, and audience needs.
• Collaborate with departments throughout the organization to develop appropriate marketing and communications strategies for exhibitions, events, programs, fundraising, membership, hospitality, education, and other organizational priorities.
• Maintain current knowledge of Turtle Bay programs, events, exhibitions, visitor experiences, and organizational initiatives to ensure marketing and communications accurately and effectively represent the Park.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with media outlets, tourism organizations, community partners, advertising vendors, agencies, and other external partners.
• Serve as a Turtle Bay representative and point of contact for media, public relations, travel and tourism, and community communications as appropriate.
• Develop press releases, media pitches, talking points, public statements, and other communications materials as needed.
• Lead or support organizational communications during sensitive or rapidly developing situations, coordinating messaging with executive leadership and appropriate departments.
• Negotiate and manage advertising agreements, media buys, vendor relationships, production contracts, and promotional partnerships.
• Develop, manage, and monitor the annual Marketing & Public Relations budget, ensuring resources are strategically allocated and expenditures remain within approved budgets.
• Manage multiple concurrent campaigns and projects, establishing timelines, coordinating internal and external contributors, maintaining project documentation, and ensuring deadlines and deliverables are successfully completed.
• Maintain organized marketing assets, advertising accounts, media files, project documentation, vendor information, and other departmental resources to support continuity and efficient operations.
• Stay current on marketing trends, emerging technologies, digital platforms, advertising practices, audience behavior, and industry developments relevant to Turtle Bay and the tourism, cultural attraction, and hospitality industries.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
III. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. Master’s degree desirable.
• Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible professional experience in marketing, advertising, communications, or public relations.
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing integrated marketing campaigns across digital and traditional channels.
• Experience managing marketing staff, creative teams, vendors, agencies, or other contributors strongly preferred.
• Experience managing paid advertising campaigns and marketing budgets strongly preferred.
• Professional experience with photography, videography, graphic design, creative production, or content development strongly preferred.
IV. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated public speaking ability. Must be able to communicate compellingly and professionally in a variety of styles and circumstances and interact effectively with staff, executive leadership, media, community partners, vendors, and civic and business contacts.
• Strong leadership and team-management skills, with the ability to establish priorities, delegate effectively, provide direction and feedback, and develop staff.
• Excellent project-management and organizational skills, including the ability to independently manage multiple campaigns, projects, deadlines, budgets, vendors, and organizational priorities simultaneously.
• Strong strategic thinking, creative problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated creative thinking and ability to translate organizational goals into compelling marketing campaigns and audience-facing communications.
• Strong knowledge of digital marketing, including paid social media, search advertising, audience targeting, campaign optimization, analytics, social media management, website content, and digital advertising strategy.
• Strong understanding of traditional media planning and buying, including television, radio, print, outdoor advertising, and other appropriate channels.
• Ability to analyze marketing performance, audience data, campaign results, and other metrics to guide decision-making and improve marketing effectiveness.
• Strong social media strategy, content development, and community-management skills.
• Strong public relations and media-relations skills, including experience developing media relationships, press materials, public statements, and organizational messaging.
• Excellent crisis communication skills, with the ability to recognize developing issues, exercise sound judgment, coordinate with leadership, and take appropriate corrective or communications action.
• Ability to negotiate and manage contracts and relationships with media outlets, advertising vendors, agencies, photographers, videographers, and other external partners.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, manage, track, and optimize departmental and project budgets.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly applications such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro. Hands-on creative production experience is strongly preferred.
• Photography, videography, and video-editing experience strongly preferred.
• Experience managing website content through a content management system (CMS); Squarespace experience preferred.
• Experience with social media management, email marketing, digital advertising, analytics, and project-management platforms.
• Working knowledge of Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office and comfort working in a macOS environment.
• Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new marketing technologies, software platforms, digital tools, and emerging marketing practices.
• Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and extended days, as needed for events, media opportunities, photography/video production, and other organizational priorities.
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license or be able to acquire one within ten (10) days and provide a clean DMV report.
