Opportunity

BHSI has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriting Manager to join our Excess & Surplus Lines Small Commercial team. This new position will be based in Atlanta or Boston and is ideal for an experienced Small Commercial Underwriter with a minimum of 10 years of property and casualty lines underwriting experience, preferably in a surplus lines environment. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting General Liability and Property business and will play a key role in growing the new E&S Small Commercial product. 

This position operates in a highly collaborative environment and requires at least four days in the office each week. Depending on relevant skills and experience, the successful candidate may be hired at the Assistant Vice President (AVP) or Vice President (VP) level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the build-out and profitable growth of the Excess & Surplus Lines Small Commercial book of business.
  • Evaluate, select, and price small commercial General Liability and Property accounts.
  • Apply sound underwriting judgment to assess risk and make account-level decisions aligned with the business strategy.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with distribution partners and intermediaries.
  • Contribute to the development of underwriting appetite, guidelines, and policy forms that support expansion opportunities.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to advance the new E&S Small Commercial product.
  • Represent BHSI with integrity and demonstrate leadership in the marketplace.

Key Skills

  • Property and casualty underwriting expertise, including the ability to evaluate and price small commercial risks.
  • Knowledge of General Liability and Property coverage and policy forms.
  • Analytical skills to assess account information, identify key exposures, and support disciplined underwriting decisions.
  • Relationship-management skills for effective engagement with distribution partners and intermediaries.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills to manage priorities and support the growth of a developing book of business.
  • Leadership, collaboration, sound judgment, and a consistent commitment to integrity.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of Small Commercial insurance experience with an insurance carrier or insurance broking firm.
  • Technical underwriting skills with expertise in property and casualty underwriting.
  • Experience underwriting General Liability and Property business.
  • Experience working with and interpreting policy forms.
  • Ability to work from the Atlanta or Boston office at least four days per week.

The base salary range for this position is $135,000 to $180,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
