CHIEF SERVICES OFFICER

Description
The Federation of State Medical Boards invites applications and nominations for the position of Chief Services Officer (“CSO”).
The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) is entering an exciting period of strategic evolution as it expands the services, technology, and capabilities it provides to its member boards and the broader medical regulatory community. As the national organization representing the nation's state medical boards, FSMB plays a unique dual role, serving as both a trusted service organization and the leading advocate for medical regulation, physician licensure, and public protection. To achieve the next level of organizational performance, FSMB is seeking an innovative, collaborative, enterprise-minded leader to serve as its next Chief Services Officer (CSO).
Reporting to the President and CEO, Dr. Humayun “Hank” Chaudhry, the CSO is a key member of the executive leadership team with broad responsibility for advancing operational excellence and organizational performance across FSMB’s diverse portfolio of services, assessment programs, technology, data resources, and member experience. Working closely with senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and external partners, including the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the CSO will ensure effective execution across business units, strengthen operational alignment and accountability, identify opportunities to improve processes and service delivery, and position FSMB to respond to the evolving needs of its member boards. Technology, data, and artificial intelligence will be important enablers of this work, supporting greater efficiency, innovation, and organizational effectiveness.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a collaborative, forward-looking executive to build upon a strong organizational foundation, thoughtfully advance operational excellence and innovation, and help elevate FSMB to its next level of organizational performance and national influence.
The successful leader will bring broad operational leadership experience, strengthen alignment and execution across a complex portfolio of services and programs, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and enhance value for member boards, and ensure FSMB remains the premier organization supporting medical regulation and physician licensure in an increasingly complex healthcare environment. Success in this role does not require being the functional expert across every area of the portfolio. Rather, they will bring an enterprise perspective, recognizing the interdependencies across operations, services, assessment, technology, and people while aligning resources and strategy to position FSMB for continued success. The successful leader will possess the judgment to know what should evolve and the wisdom to recognize what should remain unchanged. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CSO provides enterprise leadership across FSMB’s operations, service portfolio, assessment programs, technology, and innovation functions. With responsibility for a broad and complex portfolio, the CSO will ensure effective execution, operational alignment, and continuous improvement while positioning FSMB to meet the evolving needs of its member boards and the broader medical regulatory community.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished enterprise operations leader with broad business acumen and experience leading complex, multi-unit organizations. They will demonstrate a strong record of translating strategy into execution, optimizing operations and service delivery, developing senior leaders, and driving performance across interconnected functions. The successful candidate will also possess sufficient technology fluency to understand how data, analytics, emerging technologies, and artificial intelligence can enable operational effectiveness, inform strategy, and create new opportunities for the organization. Equally important, the successful candidate will possess exceptional emotional intelligence and interpersonal effectiveness, with the ability to build trust, foster collaboration, communicate through change, and lead by influence rather than authority. They will excel at building relationships across executive leadership, staff, member boards, and external partners while creating an environment of trust, engagement, accountability, and shared purpose.
Qualified candidates should hold an MBA, MPH or related graduate degree; degrees in technical fields, data sciences, or information systems are also welcomed.
