Senior AI Engineer

Company Description
Bilue is a digital consultancy that designs and builds smart, user-friendly technology for some of Australia’s most well-known businesses. From mobile apps to beautifully designed web platforms and digital experiences, we create solutions that drive impact and deliver exceptional customer outcomes.
Our culture is people-first and purpose-driven. We’re a down-to-earth, values-led team with offices in Sydney and Melbourne, and a growing presence in Manila. We genuinely enjoy working together, whether we’re solving tough tech problems, brainstorming creative solutions, or grabbing a coffee between meetings. Curiosity is encouraged. Collaboration is second nature.
We value excellence, not ego, and back each other to do great work without micromanagement. With low politics and high trust, it’s a place where delivery people, designers, and engineers genuinely connect, and where everyone has a voice, space to grow, and a little fun along the way.
Job Description
The Role
As an AI Engineer at Bilue, you’ll design, build and ship AI systems for clients across financial services, government, insurance and retail. You’ll sit in AI Labs, splitting your time between client delivery and shaping the patterns, tooling and standards the rest of the team builds on.
This isn’t a research role. You’ll know what good code looks like, but most of your time goes into framing the problem, directing AI to build the solution, and proving it works. You’ll build agentic systems that hold up with real users in real enterprise environments, and help define what production-grade means at Bilue.
What You’ll Do
Client Delivery
- Start from the client’s real pain point and work out where AI fits, and where it doesn’t
- Design and build agentic systems, memory systems and LLM-powered features for enterprise clients, from architecture through to production
- Architect cloud-native AI solutions on AWS, Azure or GCP, with LLMOps pipelines built to scale
- Integrate AI into the platforms clients already run, like CRM, ERP, lending and claims systems, through well-designed APIs and data pipelines
- Lead AI technical delivery in cross-functional squads alongside designers, strategists and client stakeholders
- Prove it works before it ships, with test cases, evaluation harnesses, red-teaming, bias testing and human-in-the-loop design
Building our capability
- Shape Bilue’s reference architectures for knowledge pipelines, agentic systems, LLM integrations and evaluation
- Help set the engineering bar for AI work, covering code quality, testing, prompt evaluation, model selection and cost optimisation
- Build reusable tools, accelerators and skills so every project starts further ahead than the last
- Share what you learn through documentation, tech talks and mentoring
Qualifications
What we're looking for
- A track record of shipping AI or GenAI solutions to production. Demos are great, but we want to hear what happened after launch
- Strong Python skills, with TypeScript or Java a plus
- Confident directing coding agents, with the judgement to know when their output isn’t good enough
- Hands-on experience with agentic frameworks and vector search, whether with frameworks like LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex or CrewAI, or your own
- Working depth in at least one cloud platform (AWS, Azure or GCP)
- Solid engineering fundamentals: SQL, ETL/ELT, distributed systems, unstructured data, APIs, microservices and enterprise integration patterns
- Experience that you test what you build: you can tell us how you knew a system was working, and what you changed when it wasn't. Prompt versioning, drift detection and cost monitoring in production are a big plus
- The ability to explain complex ideas to client executives, and to think about why a system matters, not just how it works
- A low-ego, collaborative approach, with strong opinions you're happy to change when the evidence says so
- Comfortable working across multiple clients with ambiguous requirements
Bonus Points
- AWS AI stack experience, such as Bedrock, AgentCore, Strands, SageMaker, Lambda and Step Functions
- Familiarity with responsible AI frameworks, bias testing tools or AI governance practices
- Consulting or hyperscaler experience delivering for external clients under real constraints
- Open source contributions, AI research or published technical writing

A note on your application
Every application is read by a real person on our team. Use AI in your work, but please don’t use it to write your CV. A generated CV tells us what a model thinks we want to hear, and we’d much rather hear it from you. We want to know the person behind the projects.
When you apply, we’ll ask you about one AI system you’ve shipped: how you knew it was working, and what broke. A few honest sentences beat a polished essay.
Working rights
This is a full-time position based in Sydney, NSW. To be considered, candidates must have unrestricted working rights in Australia.
We’re only accepting applications directly from candidates, so no agencies please.
