About the Role

POSITION SUMMARY

The Industrial Fire Captain/EMT is the first-line leader of an assigned RMF fire company at the Panasonic industrial facility. The Captain directs day-to-day shift operations, develops and maintains crew readiness, ensures personnel safety, and supervises emergency response within approved site capabilities. The Captain may function as initial Incident Commander until command is transferred to a qualified higher-ranking officer and reports directly to the Site Fire Chief or assigned RMF designee.

Shift leadership and crew accountability

  • Assign and supervise daily tasks, shift briefings, crew accountability, station duties, training, and emergency readiness; maintain professionalism, discipline, and a supportive safety culture.
  • Verify assigned shift staffing, current certifications, PPE/SCBA readiness, and daily apparatus/equipment inspection records; promptly report staffing or capability deficiencies to the Site Fire Chief.
  • Coach Firefighters and Engineers; deliver documented performance feedback, identify skills gaps, and contribute to formal evaluations and improvement plans as directed by the Chief.
  • Ensure station quarters, apparatus, tools, radios, monitoring equipment, and supplies are maintained in safe operational condition; promptly tag, report, and remove defective equipment from service.

Emergency response and incident command

  • Lead the crew at incidents involving fires, fire alarms, medical calls, hazardous material releases, and other assigned emergencies under RMF SOPs, client procedures, the incident command system, and the site’s approved emergency response plan.
  • Establish command when first qualified officer on scene; complete initial size-up, identify hazards and response limitations, declare strategy and tactical objectives, establish accountability, and request additional resources as needed.
  • Maintain crew safety, risk-based decision-making, scene communications, rehabilitation, and emergency procedures; supervise the safe use of apparatus and assigned suppression, detection, and medical equipment.
  • Provide or supervise EMT-level patient care within Kansas certification, authorized medical oversight, approved protocols, and agency policy; complete or review required patient care documentation.

Site risk reduction and training

  • Maintain working knowledge of facility layout, roads, hydrants, water supplies, fixed fire protection systems, hazards, emergency shutdown interfaces, access restrictions, and pre-incident plans.
  • Conduct and document routine crew training, drills, and exercises according to the site training plan; verify proficiency before assigning personnel to specialized functions.
  • Train and brief crews on site-specific hazards, including battery-related fire/thermal runaway, chemicals, energized systems, industrial processes, and gas/air monitoring where applicable to assigned response duties.
  • Coordinate with site EHS, security, emergency management, maintenance, and outside responders through established channels; support inspections and preplanning as assigned.

Documentation and compliance

  • Review and submit accurate incident, unit activity, staffing, training, inspection, equipment, and shift handoff records within established deadlines.
  • Follow RMF and client policies, staffing and safety procedures, drug/alcohol requirements, reporting protocols, and the chain of command; communicate critical issues immediately.
  • Participate in investigations, after-action reviews, corrective actions, and process improvement activities under direction of the Site Fire Chief.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 21 years of age and high school diploma or GED.
  • Five years of full-time fire service experience, including demonstrated leadership experience or readiness to serve as a company officer.
  • Firefighter I and II credentials (NFPA 1010 or recognized legacy NFPA 1001 equivalent) and Fire Officer I (NFPA 1020 or recognized legacy NFPA 1021 equivalent).
  • Hazardous Materials Operations certification consistent with NFPA 470 or recognized predecessor standard.
  • Current Kansas EMT certification, or documented eligibility with the ability to obtain it before providing independent EMS care; current AHA BLS/CPR/AED or RMF-approved equivalent.
  • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800 training or RMF-approved equivalent; documented incident-command competency.
  • Valid driver’s license and qualification to operate assigned apparatus where required; meet RMF/client background, physical performance, medical, and respiratory protection requirements applicable to assigned functions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, incident safety officer training, or recognized company officer development program.
  • Hazardous Materials Technician, Confined Space Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue Technician, or other specialized qualifications matched to the site response plan.
  • Industrial facility emergency response and battery/chemical manufacturing experience.

PHYSICAL, SAFETY & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Perform strenuous emergency response tasks while wearing assigned PPE and respiratory protection, including climbing stairs, moving equipment, operating hose lines, and working in high-noise, low-visibility, variable-temperature environments.
  • Maintain required medical clearance, respirator fit testing, physical fitness/ability, and training for assigned tasks. Essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

EMPLOYMENT & OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS

  • Full-time hourly position assigned to operational shifts, which may include 12-hour or other RMF-approved schedules, rotating nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency call-in, and training travel.
  • Safety-sensitive position subject to RMF and applicable client substance testing, confidentiality, and facility access requirements as permitted by law.
